These medium-sized apples, both tart and sweet, are transformed into savory delights, perfect as a dessert or to accompany roasted pork, chicken, or duck. The combination of organic sage leaves, olive oil, unsalted butter, and a sprinkle of coarse salt infuses each apple with layers of flavor. As they bake to tender perfection, the kitchen fills with the warm aroma of autumn. Once out of the oven, a final touch of organic raw crunchy sugar crowns these baked apples, creating a delightful contrast of sweetness against the earthy sage. Whether you serve them for dessert or as a side, these Baked Apples with Fresh Sage offer a taste of fall that's both comforting and elegant, bringing seasonal goodness to your table.

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Place the apples on a work surface with the stem side facing up. Remove the peel from the bottom half of each apple. Set aside a few sage leaves to place in the roasting pan as noted below.

  2. Core the apples and divide the remaining sage leaves equally among the apples, placing them into the space where the cores were removed.

  3. In a heavy baking dish, heat the olive oil and butter until the butter is melted. Place a few sage leaves into the pan and the place the apples into the pan. Cover the pan tightly with foil or a lid.

  4. Bake in a preheated 375-degree oven until tender but not disintegrating (about 30 minutes, but the precise baking time will vary according to the variety of apple that you are using).

  5. When tender, remove the apples from the oven. Sprinkle sparingly with coarse salt and then top with organic raw sugar.
